A team is a group of people who work towards a common goal, and although teams come in all shapes and sizes, some qualities separate the good from the great. Honing in on your team’s strengths and weaknesses, and working on them often, will allow your company to scale to new heights while avoiding common pitfalls like missed deadlines, poor communication, and lack of alignment. So if you’re ready to take your team from good to great, here are the qualities that boost performance, unity, and spirit.

1) Don’t point fingers.

Be quick to announce failure and even quicker to work on a solution.

2) Be patient.

Patience is all about not being selfish. When people don’t have patience, they think their time is more valuable than others. Show patience to your colleagues, and they will feel appreciated, listened to, and worth your time. Taking these actions leads to a healthier, safer, and more productive work environment.

3) Have respect for your colleagues.

Respect comes in many forms. It’s tolerance, honesty, and understanding (to name a few). The best teams are ones that have mutual respect amongst their members.

4) Understand the company’s mission.

People need to know why they are here and what they are doing. Beyond their job title, how are they empowered to make the company better? Empowered, passionate employees will bring their whole selves to work and be proud of whom they work for. Never forget, your best advocates are your people.

5) Work on the same timeline.

To avoid frustration or disappointment, teams must have clear goals with defined timelines. Healthy competitiveness is a fun way to boost team spirit and get tasks completed on time.

6) Delegate tasks.

Solid and happy teams not only enjoy working together, they know how to adapt and whom to turn to when a problem arises. As we learn what our colleagues specialize in and bring to the table what we specialize in, delegation becomes more efficient and streamlined.

7) Practice self-reflection.

You’re not an expert in everything. Know what you’re good at and what you’re not.

8) Challenge the status quo.

To keep improving, both as a team and company, it’s vital to question company aspects, norms, and policies. The best way to create an inclusive team is to have a culture where no topic for improvement is off-limits.
